Burundi English School (BES)

1. Homework

It is an integral part of every student’s educational program. Homework is set by teachers and should be supported by parents. It is an extension of classroom assignments and should vary according to the individual student’s grade level, abilities and needs. The primary function of homework is to assist and improve the student’s learning.
Homework assignments begin in kindergarten One. A place and time should be set, in each home, for Homework activity. The most important part of this activity is communication in English. Insist that your child communicate completely in English during this activity. This includes Reading and Journal writing, which are important parts of Homework.

 2. Library Books/Reading

Reading to and having your child read for you, in English, is an important part of your child’s language development. We have a full range of books in our library for all ages and we encourage you and your child to use our facilities.

 3. Journal Writing

Having your child keep an English Journal at home is a great way to foster the acquisition of the English Language. All grades will be taking home a journal every night. Kindergarten students start Journal writing in on the sixth month of the school year.

 4. School Clubs

BES believes that education must be innovative to empower students gain extracurricular skills to help them achieve their life goals. To allow students acquire other life skills in addition to what they learn in classes school clubs were set up.
Students from grade 4 to the highest grade are required to participate in school clubs which take place on Thursdays from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The school clubs offer an opportunity to your child/children to acquire skills in Art, traditional and modern dance, cooking, games, English language art, and many more.
In addition, club activities reinforce students’ sociability as they gather students from different ages and classes.

 5. Evaluation of students’ learning progress

Evaluation and examinations are key tools used to assess students’ learning progress and achievement. In order to make an ongoing check of students’ learning progress and ensure students’ good result achievements, we conduct ongoing assessments in which home assignments, quizzes and exams are regularly done. In the middle of each term, a directorate test commonly known as mid-term exam is given to students from grade 1 up to grade 13. This test is chosen by a different teacher as external examiner also helps the school administration to evaluate the teaching/learning progress reported about by the class teacher.

In February, IGCSE, AS and A levels students sit for mock exams in order to prepare them for Pearson Edexcel May-June Final Exams. The results of mock exams are also considered as second mid-term exams for the same levels.

At the end of each term, the school organizes end of term exams that cover all materials taught during the term. The combination of quizzes and exams done each term are aggregated at the end of the school year to determine if a student is promoted to the next grade.

Pearson Edexcel Final Exams are the key determinants for IGCSE, AS and A levels academic progress.

 6. Class size guideline

Our classroom size is 10 students in play school, 20 students in kindergarten classes and 25 students in primary school and secondary school classes.
